Read the Poem Below called Citizens of the World by Dave Calder

when you are very small
maybe not quite born
your parents move
for some reason you may never understand they move
from their own town
from their own land
and you grow up in a place
that is never quite your home

and all your childhood people
with a smile or a fist say
you’re not from here are you
and part of you says fiercely yes I am
and part of you feels no I’m not
I belong where my parents belonged

but when you go to their town, their country
people there also say
you’re not from here are you
and part of you says no I’m not
and part of you feels fiercely yes I am

and so you grow up both and neither
and belong everywhere and nowhere much the same
both stronger and weaker for the lack of ground
able to fly but not to rest

and all over the world, though you feel alone
are millions like you, like a great flock of swallows
soaring or faling exhausted, wings beating the rhythem
of the wind that laughs at fences or frontiers,
whose home is itself, and the whole world it moves over.

  1. 1. The poem is about refugees fleeing their own country to stay safe, this could be because of war or political reasons.

    2. These people are refugees, or they are asylum seekers.

    3. This poem makes me feel upset, but surprised that people can survive through events like that. It also makes me feel quite empathetic to the refugees.

    4. As I said in the first question, their land isn’t safe for them to live in, mostly because of other selfish people.

    5. What the word ‘home’ means to the refugees is: they don’t really have a home around the world, but they are allowed to stay in a new country which could be ‘home’ for them. To me, their old home isn’t home to them anymore, because a home needs to be same and be warm, so that you can live in it.

  2. 1. This poem is about refugees because there fleeing there own country to become safe. This may be because of war or political reasons. Also the government might disagree in what they believed, this includes religion or belief.
    2. These people might be refugees or asylum seekers as they are fleeing their home land to get safe.
    3. This poem actually makes me feel surprised because I dont understand how they get through amazing things like being on a boat for something like months.
    4. They leave their country because of war or political reasons.

  3. The people in the poem are refugees and I know this because in the first paragraph it says that your parents move from their country and refugees have to move from their own country because its unsafe and their country is at war and that might be happening to them. This poem makes me feel sad because I feel sorry for them when they need to move from their country because its unsafe but it makes me feel happy because when they go to the UK, they feel more happier and safe. The word ‘home’ to them means to them, were they belong and were they will stay.

  4. This poem is about people leaving there country because there is either a war or the people who live there are not treated right.

I think these people are refuges and asylum seekers because they both have to leave there country and there home.

This poem makes me feel quiet sad because humans don’t have homes and a good environment but we have every thing and a good education while they don’t .

  5. 1. The poem is about refugee people and someone lost their mum and dad, their country has war, destroyed or killed. So that is why you need to leave one country to a different country.
    2. The people are asylum seekers or refugee, who need to leave their country to another country and asylum seekers are, who is worried about their country or they want to leave their country, because they are worried about what will happen in the future; maybe the country will be gone, maybe their country will be destroyed, there is so much reasons why they want to leave their country.
    3. It makes me feel sad about them or it make me feel sorry for them, because they need to leave their country or the country is having a war.
    4. Because their country is being destroyed, their country is having a war or their country is being killed ( or the governments destroyed their house, burn their house,…) , so that is why their need to leave their country to another country to be safety.
    5. The word ‘home’ mean that their really are sad about their country, family and town, because that is their home, family and everything, they lost all that things.

  6. 1. This poem is about refuges coming to another country because of war or the government.
    2. These people are asylum seekers because they’ve moved to another country.
    3. This makes me sad because they have to leave there own country.

  7. 1. This poem is about a person who has gone away from where they were supposed to live but he or she was born somewhere else.
2.He or she is a refugee.
3.If I was in he or she’s position I would be very angry due to how rude those people are.
4.There have probably have been wars happening but when it stopped he or she went back.
5.Home means where he or she wan originally from not just where they were born.

  8. This poem is about refugees having to leave their homes because maybe their homes have been burnt down or it might be for political reasons and when you move somewhere else’s people say you don’t belong here but you know you belong there but then you become less positive and start saying you don’t belong here and feel left out then you the say I belong where ever your perants belong.

  9. This poem is about people of the world. In my opinion these people are from refugee camp. It makes me feel sorry for these people. They might have to leave there homes because of their county being bombed or attacked by other countries. Maybe the refugee camp is their home because in there country it is out of control.
